In 1916, the Japanese Kichimatsu Mikimoto began culturing pearls to obtain the first round pearl.

The graft The first grafting experiments were done in 1963 in the lagoon of Bora Bora at Tahiti.

The grafting technique consists in introducing a perfectly round nucleus and a piece of mantel in the gonade of the mother of pearl.
